‘Colon-aid’ the Yeovil District Bowel Cancer Support Group
Guest Speaker
There was not a guest speaker present at this meeting.  It was discussed that people would like to invite Mr Jonathan Ockrim, Consultant Surgeon from Yeovil District Hospital to attend and talk about the way surgical procedures and post operative recovery has changed over the last 10 years and possible future developments.  Rowland will e-mail Mr Ockrim to invite him to attend the Friday 15 December meeting.

Lin Mear informed the meeting that unfortunately, there may not be a representative from the Colorectal/Stoma Care Department on this date, also Corrina will not be available to take the minutes on this date as she is on annual leave.  It was agreed that a volunteer would be sought to take the minutes on this date.

Open Forum
During the open forum, the subject of toilets for ostomy patients was raised.  It was agreed that some disabled toilets were better than others, in terms of water facilities available.  It was also discussed that people can feel uncomfortable queuing for a disabled toilet when they do not have an obvious disability.  One patient described an experience where he had a leak from his stoma at an airport and was being sent from pillar to post looking for a toilet.  Lin informed the meeting that it was possible to obtain “no waiting” cards from stoma suppliers and is called a “travel certificate”.  This credit-card sized card informs whoever you pass it to, that the person has an appliance which requires use of their private toilet facilities, if a public toilet is not available.

It was discussed that perhaps a grading system for toilets could be produced in the future.

Any Other Business
Maureen Raybould informed the meeting that she is interested in learning about irrigation.  Lin confirmed that this could be discussed at a future meeting, but made it clear that irrigation has to be performed very regularly, usually every other day, for it to be successful.

Date and Time for Next Meeting
