Maureen’s story For all of us who have had to accept the diagnosis of cancer, our journey to recovery must follow a similar pattern. When I was first diagnosed nine years ago, it filled my thoughts day and night. After my operation for a sigmoidectomy, hysterectomy and the formation of a stoma I then went to the Oncology Department in Bristol. I spent eight weeks in Bristol for radiotherapy spending more time on the ward due to complications. When that was over I had six months of chemotherapy. After each treatment I’d cross it off in my diary. In those days I thought of little else. I have always lived a full active life and I still do. I enjoy walking my dog (actually my daughter’s dog), do Pilates, Scottish Dancing and I belong to a rambling club. I hardly ever think about my cancer now, however, I have learnt to listen to my body. When it says “I’m tired” I sit down; when it says “I’m hungry” I eat; when it says “I fancy some chocolate” I satisfy that desire too! On the day of my operation 18th September 1997 I was presented with my fourth grand-child (I now have eight). A delightful little girl called Ellie. She represents the added years I have had to my life thanks to all the wonderful Doctors, Nurses, family and friends who have brought me to this point. Back Home
