In terms of the future for bowel cancer, it is hoped to improve outcomes and treatment by introducing bowel cancer screening. This is to start in Somerset in December 2007 and will involve a simple test called FOB (Faecal Occult Blood), which analyses faeces. All people aged 55 and over will be offered this test through their GP. If the result of this test is positive, people will then be counselled to have a colonoscopy performed to ascertain the cause of bleeding. If any polyps are found, they will be removed. It is hoped that by removing polyps at an early stage of development, cases of bowel cancer will reduce.
