Group Name
Heather Sutton said she was struggling with the group name as it was a bit of a mouthful to explain to people. Heather suggested that “Colon-aid” be considered as an alternative. As we now also catered for ostomates without a cancer link it was felt the proposed name would cover all members. Following general discussion and acceptance that “Semi-colons” the most appropriate name had already been adopted by many groups a show of hands agreed to the proposal. Rowland pointed out that the web site domain name http://www.bowelcancersupport-yeovil.co.uk/ would have to be retained as he holds a Nominet Registration Certificate for the domain currently valid until 27th August 2008. Our Home page text would have to retain the key words Yeovil District Bowel Cancer Support Group to maintain our position in the various Internet search engine listings. In the World Wide Web “Colon-aid” would not attract hits as it is extremely unlikely that anyone would carry out a search for this term. Members were asked to put forward their ideas of a suitable logo for “Colon-aid” that could be added to our stationery and the web site.
Post Meeting Note from Rowland
The December 2006 Newsletter of the Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group under a heading of “What’s in a Name?” advises that the group is considering changing its name to “Somerset Bowel Cancer Support Group”. “While the term Colorectal is technically more correct quite a few people find it less meaningful”.
This group seems to be coming to the same conclusion that we did when we selected our group name that is the name reflects where they operate and what they do. I suggest that at this stage in our development we do not lose the link with our original name and our objectives in relation to bowel cancer and propose that we style ourselves as “Colon-aid” the Yeovil District Bowel Cancer Support Group.
St Margaret’s Hospice

St Margaret’s had previously sent a receipt for our earlier donations. Today’s meeting had raised a further £18.80 that Rowland passed on to St Margaret’s at the conclusion of the meeting.
