Bowel Cancer Awareness Day 18th April 2007
“SIMPLY RED” was the theme of a Bowel Cancer Awareness event at Yeovil District Hospital, with staff and visitors showing their support by wearing something crimson.

The event was organised by Maggie Soulsby, Senior Colorectal and Stoma Care Clinical Nurse Specialist at Yeovil District Hospital, and Secretary Corrina Comer, (pictured third and fourth from left) to coincide with the national Bowel Cancer Awareness month which runs throughout April.

Visitors were treated to healthy refreshments and a wide range of information, including details of a screening programme due to start later this year. This will offer a simple test for all 60 to 69-year-olds to detect signs of rectal bleeding, which is an early warning sign. Bowel cancer is highly treatable if caught at an early stage.

Rowland Hackett (far right) is a hospital volunteer who also runs Colon-aid, a local support group for anyone affected by bowel cancer. The group meets at St Margaret's Hospice in Yeovil, usually on the third Friday of the month, from 2pm to 4pm. Also pictured (left) are group members Mr and Mrs Keith and Fran Trigger.
