Minutes of the 12th Support Group meeting held on Thursday 19 July 2007 at St Margaret’s in Yeovil
Present 13 members attended the workshop.
Welcome
The group was pleased to welcome Liz Martindale a trainer from Macmillan who was running today’s workshop on “Listening & Responding”. This one day workshop replaced our normal monthly meeting.
Listening & Responding Workshop
Introductions
Liz started off by introducing herself and telling us something of her background, she then asked us to introduce ourselves.
Liz explained that the workshop focused on the basic listening and responding skills that are vital in providing support to people affected by cancer.
What will you get out of this workshop?
The opportunity to discover what “real” listening is.
An opportunity to practice your listening skills and get feedback
Discovery of questions that will draw people out
An understanding of how to hear “the music behind the words” i.e. what people really mean when they are speaking
How will this workshop be run?
Very informally
We will be using your own skills, knowledge and experiences and, through sharing these, will learn new skills
The workshop is interactive and will involve exercises in pairs and small groups. Everyone attending will have the opportunity to contribute.
Down to business
The workshop then proceeded with a succession of small group and full group exercises and activities that encouraged all members to participate and give their views or ideas or feelings on the various topics. The pace of the workshop was such that I am not going to attempt to record the details and have just highlighted some of the topics we covered:-
Active and Passive listening
Non-verbal communication on the phone
Basic Empathy
Confidentiality policy
We then did exercises on the “Significance of Confidentiality” and “Questioning”.
